This session brings you a key understanding of where to find and how to read the NCCI edit manuals and what their MUE adjudication indicators indicate about the claims. Learn how to distinguish procedure-to-procedure (PTP) edits from medically unlikely edits (MUE) and, critically, discover when you can and can’t appeal these denials, with tips and examples of successful appeals based on NCCI edit denials. Also learn how to use this knowledge to write your own successful appeals.

Carter has nearly 20 years’ experience in billing and coding compliance primarily in orthopedics and internal medicine. She is currently working for the office of integrity and compliance at URMC focusing on compliance and education for the outpatient OBGYN, pediatric and orthopedic departments. Her areas of expertise include CMS billing requirements, E/M coding audits, provider education, clinical documentation improvement and privacy compliance. |

Kimberly Cunningham, CCS, CPC, is an instructor for HCPro’s Certified Coder Boot Camp® programs. She has extensive experience with education, auditing, and management, and has worked to implement processes, policies, and curricula in her various roles. Prior to joining HCPro, she worked for an industry-leading university health system as a coding compliance manager, where her duties included education for providers, coders, and clinical documentation integrity specialists. Nancy Enos, FACMPE, CPC-I, CPMA, CEMC, CPC emeritus, is an independent consultant with the MGMA Health Care Consulting Group and a principal of Enos Medical Coding. Enos has 40 years of experience in the practice management field. She was a practice manager for 18 years before she joined LighthouseMD in 1995 as the director of Physician Services and Compliance Officer. In July 2008, she established an independent consulting practice, Enos Medical Coding (www.enosmedicalcoding.com). As an Approved PMCC and ICD-10 Instructor by the American Academy of Professional Coders, Enos provides coding certification courses, outsourced coding services, chart auditing, coding training, and consultative services and seminars in CPT and ICD-10 coding, E/M coding and documentation, and compliance planning. Enos frequently speaks on coding, compliance and reimbursement issues to audiences including national, state, and sectional MGMA conferences, and at hospitals in the provider community specializing in primary care and surgical specialties. Enos is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Practice Executives. She served as a College Forum Representative for the American College of Medical Practice Executives. |

Scott R. Grubman, JD, a partner with the law firm of Chilivis Grubman in Atlanta, Georgia, is a former Assistant United States Attorney and Department of Justice Trial Attorney who represents businesses and individuals across a wide variety of industries in connection with government and internal investigations, False Claims Act litigation, and white-collar criminal defense. Although Grubman represents clients across industries, a substantial portion of his practice involves representing healthcare providers of all types and sizes in connection with high-stakes government investigations—both criminal and civil—by agencies such as the U.S. Department of Justice, HHS-OIG, the FBI, and state Medicaid Fraud Control Units. Grubman also has extensive experience representing healthcare providers in connection with administrative proceedings, payer audits, and general healthcare regulatory matters, particularly those related to the False Claims Act (including qui tam whistleblower actions), Stark Law, and Anti-Kickback Statute. He has represented healthcare clients ranging from multihospital health systems to individual physicians, ancillary providers, and every type and size in between. |

She has over 30 years of experience working in every area of the healthcare revenue cycle. She has a bachelor’s degree in health science administration and has an extensive background in auditing, billing, coding, compliance, denials management, education, and practice management. Lumpkins works closely with providers and staff and is a certified instructor teaching both the Certified Professional Biller (CPB®) and CPC® curriculum. She is a mentor to her students and an active member and past president of AAPC’s Leesburg, Virginia, local chapter. |
