Quick Overview

Don’t “send it and forget it” when it comes to outsourcing your coding, or it will cost you. Every day a new outsourced coding company seems to emerge, ready to tackle your I-10 coding and OASIS —but are the claims they are submitting on your behalf accurate, compliant and bringing in all rightful reimbursement? While it may save you time to use these companies, if you don’t pay close attention to the quality of their outsourced coding, it could mean lost reimbursement for your agency. Yes, you read that right. Your agency is ultimately responsible for the codes assigned on the claims submitted to Medicare.

For any agency that uses a third party to code its claims, it’s imperative to have a plan in place to QA claims that are being submitted. Our expert, Brandi Whitemyer, will tell you exactly how to monitor the quality of your outsourced claims, and you will walk away ready to:

  • Understand your responsibilities and risks for claims being coded by a third party.
  • Know your outsourcer’s QA procedures, including what’s required of the employees who are assigning the codes, what level of accuracy they’re required to maintain, and how the accuracy level is measured and by whom.
  • Outline what the minimal qualifications and training requirements should be for outsource coding staff.
  • Learn how to correctly and efficiently track and audit the work of an outsourced coding company, including knowing the standards for coding accuracy and percent of charts reviewed.
  • Understand what types of policies and procedures need to be in place to handle instances when diagnoses and their sequencing need to be changed on outsourced claims.
